23 November 2003: Breakwater Marina, Townsville
The end of November signals the beginning of the cyclone season in this part of the world and true to form the weather is becoming unsettled with hot days and sudden showers. The "rainy season" is due in full force in a week or so they say. With the possiblity of a cyclone within the next 4 months we are going through our usual drill making ready for strong weather in our absence. Over the past 4 years though, such preparation has been to reduce the damage by wind-driven snow and ice. Here the rain is warm but the winds equally strong with the added enemies of mould and cockroaches flourishing below. So we are busy stripping everything moveable off the decks, all sails and lines, sunroof, cockpit clears etc at the same time ensuring a flow of air through all cabins. This packing up of illywhacker is so we can head south to visit family and friends in Sydney. We miss the boat when we do this so I won't be surprised if we'reback in a month or 2, seeking respite from the sun in air-conditioned comfort below decks.
