ILLYWHACKER - A STRANGE NAME?
Peter Carey, a well-known Australian author wrote the book
of that name and described these early Australians. He
weaves a remarkable story about a group of characters in our
colourful history, ne'er-do-wells given to tricks and deception
who wandered between country towns telling stories, having
a few drinks and sharing many a joke. These illywhackers led
untrammeled lives, enjoying new places and people and travelled
slowly without timetable or expectation. We were delighted
with that characterisation and with some sailors' imagination
seemed to fit our lifestyle, besides it is distinctly Australian
.... and unusual.
