SETO SUMMER - A book of illywhacker's cruise through Japan's Inland Sea

Author Peter Aston
Date Dec 2006
Summary

Japan is a really different cruising destination. We have written this, our first book, to record both the challenges of our cruise through the Inland Sea as well as the many happy encounters we had with the friendly, generous people we met along the way.

You may find it interesting - we hope so.

Apology

This website is not a commercial one, we keep it going for pleasure and because we value the many wonderful emails from people who enjoy reading of our adventures or from those who would like to do something similar and are seeking more information.

So we are embarrassed to include a section which requires a financial transaction. Many people however, have suggested we write a book and Seto Summer is end result. It has been a fun, learning experience producing this hands-on version but sadly, as it's outside the virtual world of the web, costs $$ to produce and to ship. I hope you find it good value should you choose to buy a copy.

If you do press the Buy Now button below, you will be transferred to Paypal before returning to this site. We see nothing of your financial details, we only receive your name and address for posting. The whole transaction is guaranteed by Paypal to be safe and secure.

Seto Summer - Author's Summary

Seto Summer is both the story of our journey by sail through Japan 's Inland Sea and a personal journey for me.The recent death of my father signalled an ill-fitting role as head of all generations of the family, it suggested responsibility and stability, yet adventures in the far corners of the world were still calling. Lyndall and I needed a spiritual, get-things-back-in-proportion lesson in a place far from preconceived Western notions.

Seto Naikai, as it is called has long been a part of Japan that for outsiders, evokes an image of a strange and mystical waterway. Laced with myriad islands often shrouded in fog, it is the gateway to enticing ports that guard hidden treasures of ancient Japan .

Over the course of the journey, we struggled to make sense of Japanese language, signs, charts and the banking system while marvelling at the social graces, customs and unrivalled generosity of the people who helped us. We were in fear of the huge volumes of shipping, fast currents, narrow passes and at times terrible weather yet we learned to find peace in quiet temples surrounded by concrete, smog and industry. We ate magnificent meals, met stunning geisha and learned to believe the unbelievable. We departed Seto Naikai as different people.

For cruising sailors there are plenty of charts to pore over, port details, a reading glossary and descriptions of mouthwatering food. The pages are illustrated with sketches drawn by a fellow yachtie and graced with black and white and colour photos taken by Lyndall. We hope you will find it good value.

The book is curently being printed and will be available for posting early December 2006. Your order will be happily accepted in the meantime!
